Every month a Tampa business calls us after buying their third router in two years. The Wi-Fi is still slow in the back offices, video calls still stutter, and someone still restarts 'the internet box' every Monday. Here's the uncomfortable truth: the router was almost never the problem.
A single router — even an expensive one — broadcasting from the front office cannot serve a 4,000 sq ft space with concrete walls and metal shelving. Wi-Fi is radio: walls, distance, and interference beat marketing claims every time. Coverage comes from multiple access points placed where people actually work, not from a bigger antenna at the wrong spot.
The classic: modem → old router → switch from Best Buy → another router someone added 'to extend the Wi-Fi', all with default settings, double NAT, and two networks fighting each other. Every hop adds failure points nobody documented.
This is the one nobody suspects. A modern access point can move data faster than the ancient Cat5 run in the wall can carry it. If your AP hangs off a kinked, stapled, un-certified cable pulled during a renovation in 2011, you bought a race car and connected it with a garden hose. Signal bars look full — the pipe behind them is the bottleneck.
Guest phones, the front-desk PC, the accounting server, the security cameras, and the smart TV — all on one network. Congestion aside, this is a security problem: a visitor's compromised laptop should never share a network with your finance folder. Segmentation (VLANs) is standard practice, not paranoia.
Most offices have literally never had a coverage survey. Access points get mounted where there happened to be an outlet — usually a closet corner behind a metal duct.
1. A site survey first — a walk of the space measuring signal, noise, and interference, producing a heatmap of reality
2. Certified cabling — Cat6/6A runs, tested and documented, to every AP location and workstation that deserves a wired drop
3. Business-grade APs, placed by data — usually 2–6 for a small office, wired via PoE, one roaming network
4. A real gateway and switch — VLANs for staff/guest/cameras, sane firewall rules, one management dashboard
5. Documentation — labeled ports and a rack any future tech can understand in five minutes
Wired beats wireless for anything that doesn't move, by the way: desktops, printers, cameras, TVs. Every device you wire is airtime freed for the devices that genuinely need Wi-Fi.
So does a car with worn brakes. The pattern we see: intermittent slowness gets tolerated for years, then the business adds VoIP phones or cloud software and the network becomes the operational bottleneck overnight. The fix costs roughly the same either way — doing it *before* it's an emergency just means you choose the date.
